ADHD and Nutrition: How Vitamins and Minerals Can Support a Healthier, Calmer Brain

Living with ADHD can sometimes feel hard. Staying focused, managing emotions, remembering tasks and getting through everyday responsibilities can be challenging. For many ADHDers, it also brings difficulties with sleep, energy, motivation and feeling overwhelmed.


But what if understanding the ADHD brain could help you find ways to make life a little easier?


As a naturopath with a focus on brain health, I believe biomedical balancing is an important part of supporting people with ADHD.

Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients provide the building blocks the brain needs to function, making sure the body has what it needs, helping to support concentration, emotional regulation, energy and overall wellbeing.


Understanding the ADHD brain

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain manages attention, motivation, impulses and executive functions. Executive functions are the skills we use to organise ourselves, plan, remember information, start tasks and regulate our responses.

The ADHD brain relies on complex communication between brain cells. Chemical messengers, including dopamine and noradrenaline, help regulate attention, motivation and other brain functions.

These chemical messengers are influenced by many things, including genetics, sleep, stress and nutrition.

This is where biomedical support may be helpful.


When the body is lacking essential nutrients, the brain may not have all the resources it needs to function at its best.


Correcting a nutritional deficiency may help improve certain symptoms or make everyday life easier, although it does not remove the underlying ADHD.


How vitamins and minerals may support ADHD

Magnesium: Supporting a calmer nervous system

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body, including normal nerve and muscle function, energy production and regulation of the nervous system.

Studies show us, some ADHDers have lower magnesium intake or inadequate magnesium status.

Magnesium is particularly interesting when looking at symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty relaxing.

  • Muscle tension.

  • Poor sleep.

  • Feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

  • Fatigue.

Correcting an inadequate magnesium intake may support overall nervous system function and sleep, which can have a positive effect on how someone manages their ADHD traits.


Zinc: Important for attention and brain development

Zinc is an essential mineral involved in brain development, immune function and the production and regulation of chemical messengers in the brain.

Some studies have found lower zinc status in ADHDers, but this does not mean that zinc deficiency causes ADHD.

If a person has inadequate zinc intake, correcting this may support normal brain function.

Including the following food sources can improve levels of zinc in the body.

  • Eggs.

  • Seafood.

  • Pumpkin seeds.

  • Legumes.

Zinc supplementation needs to be individualised, as excessive zinc can interfere with copper absorption and cause other problems.


Iron: The nutrient often overlooked in ADHD

Iron deserves particular attention when assessing ADHD, especially in children, teenagers and people who experience fatigue or restless legs.

Iron is essential for oxygen transport and brain function. It is also involved in the production of dopamine, a chemical messenger important for motivation, movement and attention.

If iron stores are low, addressing the deficiency may support energy and normal brain function.

Taking iron without testing can be dangerous, so it is important to assess iron status first.


B vitamins: Supporting energy and brain function

B vitamins help the body convert food into energy and support normal nervous system function.

Several B vitamins are involved in processes relevant to brain health:

Vitamin B6 helps the body produce neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin.

Vitamin B12  Low B12 can contribute to fatigue and neurological symptoms.

Folate (B9) supports energy and methylation processes

Thiamine (B1) is important for energy metabolism and nervous system function.

A balanced diet usually provides adequate amounts of these nutrients. However, we know some ADHDers have fussy diets and absorption issues, increasing their risk for nutritional deficiencies.


What about omega-3 fatty acids?

Although omega-3s are not vitamins or minerals, they deserve a mention because they are important for brain health, as they are involved in the structure and function of brain cells.

Sadly many people do not eat enough fatty acids in their diets, so we may need to supplement to full fill this gap.

Increasing these food sources into your everyday meals can improve brain connectivity:

  • Salmon.

  • Sardines.

  • Chia seeds.

  • Flaxseeds.

  • Walnuts.


Can nutrition help ADHD without medication?

Yes, nutrition can be part of an ADHD management plan whether someone takes medication or not.

However, it is important to be realistic about what nutrition can do and we know good nutrition can take time to become a part of everyday life.

For many people, ADHD medication is an important and effective part of managing symptoms.

For others, medication may not be suitable, may not be tolerated, or may not be the treatment they choose. In these circumstances, nutritional support, sleep, exercise, behavioural strategies, psychological support and environmental adjustments may all play an important role.

Nutrition, and in some cases, supplementation for a short time, can help individuals support their brain and overall health.


What if someone is already taking ADHD medication?

Nutritional support can also be useful for people who take ADHD medication. Some nutritional deficiencies can prevent medication working at it's best, so testing can make a big difference in its efficacy.

Medication may help with attention and impulse control, while improved nutrition supports the body's broader needs.

For example, someone taking medication may still experience:

  • Poor appetite.

  • Sleep problems.

  • Fatigue.

  • Gut issues

  • Anxiety or feeling overwhelmed.

Why individualised testing matters

Not everyone with ADHD needs the same supplements. Some people may have low iron stores. Others may have inadequate vitamin B6, poor dietary intake or another nutritional issue that needs attention.

Depending on the person, appropriate testing may help assess nutritional status and identify areas that require further investigation.


The bigger picture: Supporting the whole person

ADHD is not simply a problem with attention.

It can affect sleep, relationships, confidence, emotional regulation, learning and everyday functioning.

This is why I believe a whole-person approach is so important.

When we understand our individual brain and body better, we can begin to work with it, rather than constantly feeling as though we are fighting against it.
